Ice Land

Buildings made from blocks of ice glow at the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival in northeastern China, on Jan 4. The event, one of the largest of its kind in the world, officially opens on Thursday, Jan 5. Temperatures in the Heilongjiang province can dip below a -32 Fahrenheit (-36 degrees Celsius), but Harbin has turned the typically frigid conditions into a celebration, constructing colorfully-lit structures out of ice sawed from the frozen Songhua River.
