21% of Americans say they would give up sex for one year to keep access to Internet, survey finds

Whopping 77 percent would stop eating chocolate to keep modem going

Twenty-one percent of Americans say they would go without sex for a whole year in order to maintain access to the Internet, but that pales in comparison to Japan, a new study finds.
The Boston Consulting Group, a global management consulting firm, surveyed 1,000 people in many different countries to evaluate just how connected people are to the Internet. One of the countries surveyed was Japan, where a whopping 56 percent of people said they would give up intercourse in order to keep their modems running for one year.
In the BCG survey, 77 percent of Americans said they would (gulp) give up chocolate, 73 percent admitted they would refrain from alcohol and 69 percent even said they would stop drinking coffee to keep Internet access for one year.
Some Americans even value their modems more than cleanliness. Seven percent would be willing to give up showers for one year.
As part of the survey, Americans also said they would need to be paid approximately $2,500 to live without the Internet.
The numbers may not come as much of a shock considering how fast the Internet is growing. There are 1.6 billion Internet users in the world today, and that number will nearly double by 2016, BCG partner and author Dominic Field told yahoo.com.

Beatrice Legrain says DSK was center of attention in basement romp, then grabbed her by throat and wanted more....

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 16: International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn appears for his arraignment in federal court May 16, 2011 in New York City. International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arraigned today and is being held without bail on charges of sexually attacking a maid at a Manhattan hotel. A blond madam claims ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was the star of a 90-minute Viagra-pumped orgy in a restaurant basement in the City of Light.

Béatrice Legrain spilled the details of the alleged March 2009 lunchtime romp at the L’Aventure eatery to Vanity Fair’s Spanish language edition, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.
Strauss-Kahn — who has been embroiled in sex scandals since his 2011 arrest on charges of sexually assaulting a Manhattan hotel maid — had a 30-minute-long sexcapade with a young woman as a handful of other men gawked and pleasured themselves, the paper said.
Legrain, who reportedly runs brothels in Belgium with partner Dominique Alderweirel, said the restaurant’s owner paid the dame about $650 for her services.
During the erotic fete, Legrain claimed she tried to slip out to the loo when Strauss-Kahn, 62, cornered her.
“I got up to go to the bathroom and DSK followed me and in a passageway he grabbed me by my throat and said, ‘It’s you who I want,’ ” she said.
Alderweirel has previously been named as the massage parlor boss who provided DSK with a regular supply of call girls.
Charges against Strauss-Kahn over his encounter with maid Nafissatou Diallo at the Sofitel Hotel in New York were dropped by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance last August.
He returned to France, where he faced charges of assaulting a young writer, which also were dropped.
Most recently, investigators in France have been eying the disgraced former presidential candidate in a bevy of corruption and international hooker scandals.
One of the scandals is known as the Carlton affair after the luxury Lille hotel at the center of the alleged prostitution ring.
DSK was set to speak at the European Parliament debate next week, but bowed out after it was said his appearance would be “indecent,” the paper reported.

Man-made noise 'harms plant growth'

The noise of cars, machines and other forms of human activity could be affecting growth of wild flowers and trees, as well as animals nearby.

Man-made noise may be harmful to some plants because of the long-term impact it has on animals that pollinate flowers and disperse seeds, scientists found in tests near the noisy gas wells of New Mexico, which have compressors running 24 hours a day.
The study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, investigated the noise preferences of different animals that feed on the seeds of the pinon pine tree. It found that certain species, such as western scrub jays, tended to avoid noise, while other seed-eaters, such as mice, appeared to prefer foraging in noisy areas.
Clinton Francis, lead researcher at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Centre in North Carolina, said this difference in noise tolerance would affect the likely germination of pinon seeds because the natural instinct of jays is to hide many of the seeds they collect by burying them.
This means some inevitably survive to germinate in the next season, which is less likely in mice-infested noisy areas. "Fewer seedlings in noisy areas might eventually mean fewer mature trees, but because pinon pines are so slow-growing the shift could have gone undetected for years," Dr Francis said.

Wasted talent: Greece's young unemployed majority By Chloe Hadjimatheou BBC World Service, Athens

Students shout at a protest of austerity cuts in Athens in February
Students and young people have come out in force at Athens' many protests

More than half of young people in Greece are unemployed, the worst record for any eurozone country. Many feel abandoned by the state and are frustrated and angry.
Emilio Papas opens the tall iron door to his squat near Exarhia Square, in the centre of Athens, to reveal an enormous five-storey building with high ceilings and a grand staircase.
"It was a health hazard for the whole community, full of dead birds, rancid water and maggots," he says about the abandoned social security office, which he now calls home.

In the past few months the number of jobless in Greece has shot up. The current total for young people stands at 51.1%, and Emilio Papas is one of them.
He smiles as he admits that the irony of the situation has not escaped him: living in a former social security office when neither he nor any of the other squatters has ever made any national insurance payments.
Last year Mr Papas and a group of his unemployed friends, aged between 18 and 32 years old, spent several months making the building habitable.
Each of the squatters has his own flat and they are planning on using the ground floor as a community centre for the neighbourhood.

They have also opened their doors to an older resident, 60-year-old George Koutselas, who would otherwise have been left homeless.
"I worked most of my life but none of my bosses ever paid national insurance contributions for me, so now I don't get a pension or any benefits.
"As far as the Greek state is concerned I don't exist," says Mr Koutselas.

Unemployment benefit in Greece is available only to people who have made national insurance contributions and since many young people have never had a job, they are not entitled to any financial support.
Even those who do receive the monthly payments of 360 euros (£300) see them stop after one year.
After that, unemployed people in Greece are on their own, without access to financial support or free healthcare.
Eleni Katsarea

Talk of 'revolution'

27-year-old economics graduate Eleni Katsarea is unemployed and worried she might not have a job when her benefit runs out in a few months.
"I am trying not to think about it because I get too stressed," she says.
The first person in her family to go to university, she never imagined she would end up dependent on the state.
But today one in three graduates in Greece is without work and unemployment among postgraduates has doubled.
"I have a degree, I speak several languages and I have something to offer the country but I they don't let me, there are no opportunities," says Ms Katsarea.

When she is not looking for work Eleni Katsarea goes to the centre of town where there are demonstrations almost every day.

"I would like to see a public audit of this debt they are asking us to pay. Who got all the money? Because it wasn't us," she shouts over the noise of the protest.
The talk among her and her friends is of revolution.
Nick Maltoutzis, the deputy editor of the daily English language paper, Kathimerini, says that Greece has reached a dangerous point in terms of youth unemployment.
He says too many young people are locked into a situation without prospects, without jobs and without political parties that represent their views.
"There is clearly a lot of anger building up in the system and you cannot predict how the pressure is going to express itself - but you can be sure it will not be pleasant," he says.
Brain-drain
The frustration with the lack of employment opportunities among the young is only exacerbated by the feeling that they have been abandoned by a state which offers them little support.
Local unemployment offices are shutting down as a result of cuts in public spending, and those that are open offer little or no advice on how to find a job.
The general secretary for the Ministry of Labour, Anna Stratinaki, admits that the ministry is battling to get to grips with plans for the total restructuring of the public sector.
George Koutselas at the squat he lives at in Athens
George Koutselas would be homeless if he was not living in a squat

"Young people need to show endurance, courage and solidarity so that we can overcome this difficult period together," she says.
But endurance, courage and solidarity do not pay the rent and so, for many over-educated and under-employed young people, the future is abroad.
Although there are no statistics for the numbers leaving the country, research from 2010 suggests that nearly 85% of Greeks studying abroad were not planning to return.
At Athens International Airport 25-year-old Grigoris Panayotopoulos is checking in his baggage as he prepares to fly to Trieste in Italy where he has a job as an engineer lined up.

"Who knows, maybe 10 years from now I might decide to leave behind the job and return to Greece, but at the moment I am planning on going there forever."
It is not his fault, he says, that the Greek economy is in crisis, so why should he pay the price?
As he leaves, Grigoris Panayotopoulos takes with him his skills and education. The risk for Greece is that this brain-drain could leave the country without the very people needed to rebuild the economy.
'Scars' of unemployment
But for many young people who do not have the means to leave, like Emilios Papas at the squat in the abandoned social security office, they are out on their own.
He estimates that at least 70 former government buildings around the city are being used as squats.
"Don't underestimate the hunger," reads this graffiti in Athens

"People need to start doing things for themselves because the state only has its own best interests at heart," he says.
In reality there is little the Greek government can do about the lack of jobs, so long as its hands are tied by the promises it has made to cut the deficit in return for bailout funds.
There is evidence to show that people who are unemployed for a long time in their youth have less confidence and tend to achieve less in later life. Experts call this the "unemployment scar".
So could Greece be storing up a troubled generation for the future?
Nick Maltoutzis at the newspaper Kathimerini fears that could be the case.

"People in their 20s… will end up feeling useless and then it's very difficult to change the psychology," he says.
Chloe Hadjimatheou was reporting for the BBC World Service documentary programme, Assignment

New Van Gogh painting found in Dutch museum

"Still life with Meadow Flowers and Roses," a painting dismissed for years as the work of an unknown artist has been identified as a piece by Vincent Van Gogh.

London (CNN) -- A painting dismissed for years as the work of an unknown artist has been identified as a piece by Vincent Van Gogh, after x-rays revealed an image of two wrestlers fighting underneath the floral still life.
"Still Life with Meadow Flowers and Roses" has hung in the Kroeller-Mueller Museum in the town of Otterlo, in the eastern Netherlands, since 1974, but doubts over its authorship have dogged the painting for decades.
Experts argued that the large format, the location of the signature, and the huge number of flowers in the composition all suggested the painting was the creation of an unidentified artist, rather than the famed Dutch painter, and the work was officially "dismissed" from his catalogue in 2003.
"There were so many questions around this painting," explained Teio Meedendorp, researcher at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. "There were a lot of things about it that were strange -- it couldn't quite be trusted [as a piece by Van Gogh]."
But the latest high-tech x-ray imaging has allowed scholars to re-examine an underpainting, featuring two wrestlers fighting, first glimpsed in the 1990s, and confirm that the picture is indeed by Van Gogh.
Van Gogh (1853-1890) created some of the world's best known and most loved paintings, including "Sunflowers," "Irises" and "The Starrry Night," and a number of self-portraits.
He was virtually unknown as an artist during his lifetime, but his reputation soared in the years after his suicide at the age of 37 following years of mental illness, and his works now hang in major museums and galleries around the globe.
During the art market boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s, three of Van Gogh's works succeeded each other as the most expensive paintings ever sold: "Sunflowers" for $39.9 million, "Irises" for $53.9 million, and "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" for $82.5 million.
"The painting was x-rayed before, so we knew there was something underneath, but the image was not very clear," he told CNN. "This new technique gave us a much clearer image, and lots of details about the pigments and the paint layers.
"We know Vincent painted wrestlers, we know much more than we did 10 years ago about the pigments he used, and we know that at the time, when re-using a canvas, he simply painted over the top of the previous image, without an intermediate layer.
"This painting was a complete match with all the research that has been done over the past 10 years."
Van Gogh wrote about the wrestlers picture -- which he painted as an assignment during his studies at the art academy in Antwerp -- in a letter in January 1886: "This week I painted a large thing with two nude torsos -- two wrestlers," adding that he was delighted with the result.
Research suggests that the still life was painted on the same canvas fewer than six months later, while in Paris.
"The top layer was applied not long afterwards," said Meedendorp. "We can tell this because he used a lot of zinc white in the wrestlers picture, and it dries very, very slowly.
"The x-rays show that it had not hardened completely when the still life was added, causing some cracks in the paint of the flower picture, which suggests it was painted less than half a year later."
Meedendorp said there was always the possibility of discovering other "unknown" Van Gogh works in future. "There are other paintings that haven't been x-rayed," he told CNN. "There are always other opportunities".
A new high-tech x-ray imaging technique revealed an underpainting of wrestlers, and details of the pigments used in the design, allowing experts to identify it as a Van Gogh work.

Van Gogh is thought to have painted the first picture, of wrestlers, in January 1886, while studying at the art academy in Antwerp. He is believed to have painted over it with the still life just a few months later.

Van Gogh, portrayed here by Kirk Douglas in the 1956 film "Lust for Life," led a famously troubled life, struggling with poverty and mental illness before his eventual suicide in 1890.

TIME TO BREAK UP THE BANKING WORLD'S ALL BOYS CLUB? Investment bankers are often young men with too much testosterone. To add a bit of rationality to the global financial system, maybe it’s time banking giants like Goldman Sachs bring on more women and older men.

A week after his very public resignation from Goldman Sachs, dissident banker Greg Smith is still making waves. His accusations against the investment giant, which he chided for engaging in unethical behavior with respect to its clients, were for many the straw that broke the camel’s back. Investment bankers have lost the “Master of the Universe” image they so long enjoyed. Now they’re seen more and more as “losers,” which is something that will likely impact future generations of bankers.
Since the 1980s, there’s been a glamour factor associated with investment bankers. Part of that has to do with the piles of money being earned by the bankers themselves, whose salaries match those of rock stars and top soccer players. Movies like Oliver Stone’s Wall Street (1987) and books like Michael Lewis’s Liar’s Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street (1989) cemented the macho image. Top performers from the most elite business schools were rushing to get Wall Street jobs, unfazed by the inhumanly long hours and the brutal dog-eat-dog competition.
That picture appears to be changing. In its analysis of the latest Goldman Sachs affair, the New York Times notes that graduates who once felt drawn to the top banks – “like moths to light” – are now looking at other sectors. According to the paper, financial insiders say that revelations about the lives of would-be top dogs in the finance sector are turning more and more people off, and keeping them from applying to the firms with the hardest selection criteria.
Mathematics professor Chris Wiggins of Columbia University is quoted as saying: “The claim of investment banking that it serves a social purpose by ‘lubricating capitalism’ has been eroded. It’s simply very difficult for young people to believe that they’re serving any social purpose now.”
A call for new hiring practices
At the same time, events have shown that investment banking is driven less by the rationality of efficient markets than by the high testosterone levels of young bankers. Joan Coates, a former Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs trader, has demonstrated this empirically. And that represents a danger to the whole system. A Financial Times writer noted that too much testosterone can lead to individual success, but “in a collective, it leads to excessive aggression, dangerous over-estimation of self, and herd behavior.”
Coates’s advice to the banks is to re-think their hiring policies. They should hire more women and older men, he says. A different mix in the trading room would make the vibe less hectic and cut down on the drama – sheer biology would decrease the testosterone and hence risk levels. At the same time, new hiring policies would solve the problem of how to attract new talent to the field.
