KINDRED SPIRITS: BRIGITTE BARDOT AND FAR RIGHT CANDIDATE MARINE LE PEN

Sex-symbol turned actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has endorsed right-wing party candidate Marine Le Pen for France's presidential elections. A critic of immigration, the former beauty has been cited five times for "inciting racial hatred".

PARIS -- Brigitte Bardot has announced she’ll vote for Marine Le Pen during Sunday's first round of the French presidential election.
“I think this woman is just admirable. She has the best ideas, especially compared to those other two clowns,” she declares, talking about the election frontrunners, François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.
Bardot, 77, does not mince her words, or actions. The longtime animal rights activist has also become an outspoken critic of immigration, and has been cited five times for "inciting racial hatred."
She doesn't hold back either when she talking about the two leading candidates, particularly Sarkozy, for whom she voted in 2007: “I am disgusted by this guy,” she says. As for François Hollande, she has a very personal opinion of the reason why it is not a good idea to vote for him. “France cannot be ruled by a man named ‘Hollande.’ It’s just not possible! It would be as if we had a president named ‘Germany’,” she explains.
According to the 1960s icon, Marine Le Pen is different because she managed to “rehabilitate the National Front’s image.” “This new ‘Marine version’ of the French extreme-right party is neither fascist nor Nazi,” says Bardot, who also appreciates the fact that “Marine is the only one who denounced the halal meat scandal, which is one of my priorities, as I fight against ritual slaughter.”
But according to Brigitte Bardot, the archetypal “ideal president” remains Vladimir Putin, because “he did more for animals’ rights than any of our presidents.”

WHAT FRENCH WOMEN WANT: VAST NEW SEXUALITY STUDY FINDS LIBERATION, LONGINGS

A renowned French sexologist has followed up an in-depth study on men and sex with a survey of female sexuality. Heterosexual women of all ages were asked about their desires, fulfilled or otherwise. For their partners, there's good news and bad.

What turns women on? (Foxtongue)

By Mélina Gazsi
LE MONDE/Worldcrunch
PARIS – Here are the basics: 3,404 heterosexual women, aged 15 to 80 (with an average age of 35), married or in a civil union and living with their partner, filled in an online form with the details of the most intimate aspect of their lives: their sexuality.
One year after a similar male survey was published as Les Hommes, le sexe et l’amour (Men, Sex andLove), Philippe Brenot, a French psychiatrist, sexologist and president of the International Observatory of Couples, has turned his attention to women's sexuality.
With answers to the 200 questions, the findings have just been published as Les Femmes, le sexe et l’amour (Women, Sex and Love).
The 300-page didactic publication, filled with testimonials, comments and statistics, is mainly intended for women, although Brenot advises their companions to read it. The findings may sometimes seem contradictory, but don't appear to lack any authenticity.
Among the many testimonials is 23-year-old Lucia: "I love raunchy sex and feelings expressed through words and tenderness." Karine, 28, says: "I like being taken completely, to surrender my body to my companion, I like it when he sees me lose control under his caresses." What turns 46 year-old Anaïs on? "Alternating between sex that is tender and savage." As for Laurence, 30, she confesses:" I would like to live our sexual union more intensely. "
But the core lesson the survey teaches us that cuts across all particularities and preferences: women are free. "They speak more easily of desire, of pleasure, of their private practices," writes Brenot. "They experience their sexuality in a more open way. This is a huge change."
Women speak without reserve about vibrators, sex toys, their fantasies, their practices and preferences. And this applies to all generations, even to women who lived through the years that led them from liberation to freedom. They are not afraid to say what’s on their mind, including that they would like to experience more pleasure.
Climaxes and magazine covers
This is the survey’s second lesson: in spite of all the changes in women’s sexuality, pleasure is not always achieved. Although 74% of women say they have no trouble experiencing desire and pleasure, only 16% climax every time, 55% often, 21% rarely and 5% never.
As for women’s "first time," it hardly makes it to the pantheon of enjoyment. Contrary to the 76% of men who have an orgasm the first time they have sex, 42% of women say "it went well." A rather vague way to put it...
For others, it’s quite simply a bad memory: "It is painful for them because the first time is a moment they tend to idealize, and it can turn out to be very disappointing, thus, for one-third of women at least, it affects their sexual lives," says the psychiatrist. "When sex is linked to performance, when orgasm becomes a priority, women feel guilty for not climaxing with the man they love, they feel guilty for not being one of these satisfied women magazines talk about. It makes them feel bad about themselves."
What’s more worrying is that the fact that women not climaxing leads more and more often to divorces or separations because, according to Brenot, men want their partners to be satisfied.
Masturbation is no longer a guilty pleasure: 68% of women say they have already tried it. Brenot thinks masturbation is crucial to learn and lead a healthy sex life. "It is through autoeroticism that a woman will be able to be on the same wavelength as her partner and thus have lasting relationships. The problem is, women are wondering whether they are allowed to masturbate if they have a partner!" Roughly 26% masturbate only once a month, while 15% never do.
As to what arouses women’s desire, the survey mentions dreams, fantasies and expectations -- thoughts that are "stimulating, if not necessary, for a healthy sex life," the sexologist says. Many women admit to having them.
What turns them on? They respond primarily to their partners’ kindness and tenderness. Desire is present in every woman, but it may be hampered by aggressive or masculine abruptness, by displays of bad moods and slightly rough or indelicate behavior. Kindness, tenderness and caresses bring women to a state of relaxation that leaves them prone to sexual arousal and works in favor of a healthy sexuality.
"As a general rule, and except in cases of sexual dysfunctions, it takes 10 seconds for a 20-year-old man to get an erection. It’s not the same for women, who need caresses and tenderness; it takes time for desire to build. This is neither whims nor caprices. It’s the reality of feminine intimacy," says Brenot. "So there really is a difference between the sexes, that men – and women — must take into account."
The good news is that, according to the survey, young women tend to have partners who are more tender, gentle, respectful and more responsive to their desires than were the men of previous generations.

Persian invaders of Greece 'did perish in tsunami'

German geologists believe a tsunami recorded by the ancient historian Herodotus did indeed protect a Greek village from Persian invaders.
They say they have found evidence in northern Greece that the event in 479 BC saved the village of Potidaea.
Herodotus recorded that huge waves had killed hundreds of Persian soldiers during the siege of the village.
BBC map
The scientists from Aachen University warn the area may experience another massive marine event.
They say that northern coastal regions should be included among the Greek regions prone to tsunamis.
It is usually the southern coast of Greece which is identified as a risk area.
Greek geophysicists say earthquakes pose a much greater threat to the country than tsunamis.
"We have found several historic tsunamis on the coast," Aachen's Professor Klaus Reicherter told Germany's DPA news agency.
"That means there is a certain risk for the coastal areas."
Sediment on the northern Greek peninsula where Potidaea and the modern town of Nea Poteidaia are located shows signs of massive marine events, such as large waves, the Aachen study found.
Excavations in the suburbs of the nearby ancient city of Mende uncovered sea shells likely to have been lifted from the ocean bed and tossed about during a tsunami.
The findings were presented at the annual conference of the Seismological Society of America in San Diego, California.
Herodotus records: "Then there came upon them [the Persians] a great flood-tide of the sea, higher than ever before, as the natives of the place say, though high tides come often.
"So those of them who could not swim perished, and those who could were slain by the men of Potidaia who put out to them in boats."
Then there came upon them a great flood-tide of the sea, higher than ever before, as the natives of the place say, though high tides come often ”

Nicolas Sarkozy: Why is the French president so disliked? By Hugh Schofield BBC News, Paris‏

If President Nicolas Sarkozy fails to win a second term, as many polls are predicting ahead of Sunday's first round of voting, perhaps the biggest factor will be the personal loathing that he elicits in so many of the French. What's behind it?
From the moment he took office in 2007, no French president in modern times has been the object of such blatant dislike.
It is an animosity quite distinct from opposition to his actual policies.
All leaders expect hostility for the things they do. Few get it in such measure for the things they are.
"There is an irrational hatred of Nicolas Sarkozy among much of the public, and it is playing a major part in this election," says Jean-Sebastien Ferjou who edits the news website Atlantico.
"I say 'irrational' because that is what it is. Polls show that if you ask people about this or that policy of Sarkozy's - but don't mention his name - they will tend to support it.
"But they're still not going to vote for him."
For Ferjou, the main reason for the hostility is that Sarkozy was the first French leader to declare himself unashamedly on the political right.
"It is ironic because in fact he is ideologically totally unstructured. His talent is for energy and movement, and it is impossible to say what sort of intellectual history he comes from," says Ferjou.
"But he sent out a message very clearly that he was not embarrassed about saying he was on the right - and this set off a huge backlash of hostility.
"You have to understand that for years the right in France has totally abandoned the intellectual debate to the left.
"For so-called 'right-wing' parties, the only argument they put forward was that they were better managers than the left. They could run things better. But they had surrendered in the battle of ideas and values.
"Sarkozy ended that complicity, and people hated him for it."

Sarkozy's lifestyle has come under much scrutiny in France
The tone for this "Sarkophobia" is set in the cafes and cultural salons of bourgeois Paris, where the president is routinely viewed as vulgar, money-obsessed, semi-racist and dangerous.
Recently the film director Mathieu Kassowitz said that if the president made it to round two of the election, it would show that France was a "neo-fascist collaborationist" country.
The entertainer Christophe Aleveque said in an interview that Sarkozy is "dangerous… from another planet… a fool who believes his own lies… psychologically not normal".
"If he loves money so much that is fine, but it is his problem, so may I suggest he get a job in a bank or something. And leave us alone!" he said.
Five years after he celebrated his 2007 election victory at the pricey Champs-Elysees restaurant Le Fouquet's, this is still held up as a symbol of his supposed jet-set lifestyle.
However as his supporters grow tired of pointing out, senior Socialists are regularly seen dining in expensive Paris eateries. President Mitterrand had no shortage of wealthy friends.
In 2002, the wife of the Socialist candidate Lionel Jospin told a magazine profiler how she did her shopping at Le Bon Marche - the Paris equivalent of Harrod's food hall.
But being a sophisticated display of wealth, that was considered acceptable.
For the right-wing lawyer and polemicist Gilles-William Goldnadel, the roots of the anti-Sarkozism lie in a public culture still in thrall to the allure of the left.
"It is that old tradition - revolutionary, romantic - which will attack anything that smacks of money or privilege," he says.
"And it's allied to a journalistic profession that is overwhelmingly on the left.
"Polls show that 80 to 95% of journalists are on the left or far-left, and with their obsessive focus on the so-called vices of Sarkozy, they are pushing the same agenda."
Another interpretation of Sarkophobia is offered by writer Andre Bercoff, author of La Chasse au Sarko (The Sarko Hunt).
He says the real reason people dislike the president is not "Fouquet's or bling-bling or all that nonsense. It's because he broke the rules of how to be president.
"When de Gaulle set up the Fifth Republic, he created a presidency that was very like a monarchy. And since then all presidents, of left and right, have been happy to go along with that.
"But then along came Sarkozy who said, 'I don't want to be a king - I want to be a politician. I want to be like a football coach.' And the people really resent him for it."
For Bercoff, the other reason why the president is loathed is that he has told the French some inconvenient truths.
"The French were happy as long as they were ruled by a Mitterrand or Chirac, leaders who nurtured their post-Revolutionary belief that the French are a kind of chosen people for whom the normal rules of economics don't apply," he says.
"There is still a widespread feeling in France that we should set the path to a new way of being. Look at the success of (far-left candidate) Jean-Luc Melenchon.
"But Sarkozy punctured that illusion - and again people hate him for it."
Ferjou, Goldnadel and Bercoff all believe that Sarkozy has already lost the election, and that the prevailing anti-Sarkozism is a major cause.
But at Sorbonne University, sociology professor Michel Maffesoli is not so sure.
He agrees that Sarkozy is the butt of an official culture whose exponents in the media, universities and the arts are overwhelmingly hostile.
But he draws a distinction between published opinion - the views of the intelligentsia - and public opinion.
And with the mass of the population, he argues, the president has far more of a rapport than is ever acknowledged.
"French public life has been dominated for two or three centuries by the rationalist ideas of the Enlightenment.
"But these ideas, which we might describe as those that have shaped 'modernity', are now giving way to the ideas and values of 'post-modernity,'" he says.
"Post-modernity, which is the condition our societies are moving into, is far more anchored around the emotional than the rational or intellectual.
"And Sarkozy seems to have grasped this instinctively. He is far more in phase with ordinary people than are the intellectuals who govern public life."
Maffesoli does not believe in opinion polls, because he says people know what they are expected to say, and so underplay their support for Sarkozy.
"But in the voting-booth it is different. The booth is like a womb where people reconnect with the purely emotional. It means going with their gut rather than their brains.
"That's why I think Sarkozy can still do it."
It seems a bit of a long shot. Whatever Maffesoli thinks of them, the opinion polls are pretty categoric.
But as Ferjou also points out: "More than 60% of people voting for Hollande say they are going to do it purely to get rid of Sarkozy."
Perhaps not the most positive way to embark on a new political era.

Pakistani women's lives destroyed by acid attacks

Shama in hospital with her child

Campaigners in Pakistan say cases of acid attacks are increasing in most areas, even though tougher penalties were introduced last year. An Oscar-winning Pakistani documentary has put the crime under the spotlight, but it is estimated that more than 150 women have acid thrown on them every year - usually by husbands or in-laws - and many never get justice. The BBC's Orla Guerin reports.
Her name is Shama, meaning "candle", and she says her husband burnt her flesh as if it was a candlewick.
The young mother of four has just joined the ranks of Pakistani women doused in acid. She is scarred for life, with burns on 15% of her body. Her crime was her beauty.
"My husband and I often had arguments in the house," she said, in her hospital bed. "On that day before going to sleep he said 'you take too much pride in your beauty'. Then in the middle of the night he threw acid on me, and ran away."
When her husband fled, he took her mobile phone with him, so she could not call for help.
Scorched cheeks
Shama shows me a picture taken at a children's party four months ago. It is a snapshot of an attractive young woman, with immaculate make-up, wearing an orange outfit flecked with gold.
Shama with her child before the attack
Shama had every reason to take pride in her beauty before the attack
Her hair is swept back to reveal dangling earnings. But acid has erased that confident, composed Shama.
"I feel pain at what I was, and what I have become," she said, with tears coursing down her scorched cheeks.
"All the colours have gone from my life. I feel like I'm a living corpse, even worse than a living corpse. I think I have no right to live."
Shama now lies in Ward 10a of the burns unit in Nishtar Hospital in Multan in Pakistan's Punjab province.
It is a monument to neglect. The plaster is peeling off the walls and there is a leaking pipe hanging from the ceiling. When patients need transfusions, their relatives are despatched to buy pints of blood.
But the doctors here are expert at treating women disfigured by acid - they see one or two new victims every week.
At morning rounds they gather at Shama's bed, asking if she is eating, and is keeping her burns covered with cream. They try to relieve her pain, but cannot ease her despair.
"I can't say anything about the future," she says, "maybe I won't be alive. I will try - for my kids - to get back to how I was. I have to work to build a future for them.
"If I can't I'll do what one or two other girls have done.
"They killed themselves."

Shunned victims
Fakhra Younis, a former dancing girl in Karachi, was one such woman, who ended her life to escape suffering.
It has been said of Fakhra that she died twice - once when she was drenched in acid 13 years ago, and again when she committed suicide in Italy last month.
Before taking her own life, she had endured almost 40 surgeries.
Supporters say Fakhra had given up hope of getting justice. Her former husband, who comes from a powerful political family, was acquitted of the attack.
He continues to protest his innocence.
Fakhra's death made the headlines here, but activists say many victims are shunned and silenced.
"Only about 10% of cases are getting to court," said Zohra Yusuf, the chair of Pakistan's Human Rights Commission.
"Even in high-profile cases like Fakhra's there are poor prosecutions. Most of the time, victims can't get a case registered by police."
Offenders now face a tougher sentence - between 14 years and life imprisonment - under a law passed last year. But most attackers still get off scott free, according to Marvi Memon, the former MP who sponsored the new law.
"Even if he [the attacker] gets caught, he'll pay police off and he'll get away with it in most parts of Pakistan," she said.
"It's the easiest way to punish a woman. You can just throw acid and destroy her entire life in one second."

Acid attack victim Masqood
'Multiple surgical procedures'
Marvi Memon blames a lack of political will to implement the law.
"It's very difficult to get the police to co-operate with the women," she said, "because they are under no pressure to do so."
The government admits it needs to do more for acid victims, and says implementing the new law is a major challenge.
"Passing the legislation was a first step," said Shahnaz Wazir Ali, a goverment adviser, "but how do cases get to trial speedily? That's the part we still need to work on. We need to sensitise the police, the lower courts and even the legal community."
Back in Ward 10a, there's a new arrival. A woman named Maqsood is wheeled in, still wearing clothing eaten away by the acid.
Beneath her cream shawl the skin on her face is singed and mottled, and her right eye is sealed shut.
"My son-in-law came in the night, and threw acid on me," Maqsood said "after a small family dispute. He broke in through the roof. There was no power in our area, so we could not catch him."
But he was caught later, and he at least is now in custody.
A plastic surgeon, Dr Bilal Saeed, rushes to assess the new patient. He has treated hundreds of women like Maqsood in recent years. He admits to being depressed by his work.
"On average we do multiple surgical and cosmetic procedures on these patients," he said. "But whatever we do, we are not getting their smile back."
Many commit suicide, according to Dr Saeed, in spite of his best efforts.
He says others are forced to return to the in-laws or husbands who attacked them because of social pressure or money problems.
A few beds away, Shama's children come to visit, crowding around her bed.
She reaches out a burnt arm to stroke their anxious faces, and asks for her youngest, Noor, to be placed on her chest.
"Do pray for Mummy," she tells them, "ask God to make me get better quickly."
Shama's husband remains at large. If he is ever caught she wants acid thrown on his face.
"I want the severest punishment for him," she said. "That would make anyone think a thousand times before committing such a crime."
As the children prepare to leave, Shama cannot hold back her tears. For their sake, she says she will try to keep going.
But like Fakhra Younis before her, she is not expecting justice.

Highlights
«Il divo delle ragazzine»
